Mathare faces serious social challenges, including high unemployment, child labour, violence, and a growing number of HIV/AIDS orphans. Girls and women have limited control over their lives, especially regarding their sexual and reproductive health. Many cannot afford sanitary pads, and 65% of women and girls in Kenya lack access to menstrual products. As a result, girls miss school during their periods due to a lack of pads, inadequate privacy, poor waste disposal facilities, a lack of washing soap, stigma, and cultural myths, leading to low self-esteem and school dropout.
You can help keep girls in school:
- USD 1 provides one sanitary pad pack for a girl for one month.
- USD 2 buys a bar of soap.
- USD 25 supports one girl to attend a three-day training on menstrual hygiene management, sexual reproductive health, and mental wellness (covering venue, meals, refreshments, sanitary pads, and transport).
Support a girl today, keep her confident, healthy, and in school.
